Anyone on this site that gets offended by a poster, they full well deserve to be offended. As far as countries go, we are so similar in language and lifestyles, to make fun of one, it is like making fun of ourselves.

I played with matches quite a lot back when I was a kid who was forbidden from playing with matches. Now, not so much.
gas - April 21, 2011, 5:57 pm
But pools are not made to kill people, it's a place where kids are supposed to have fun. Finally I think the best way to prevent accidents is definitely keeping them away from any weapon, the same way you would simply forbid them from touching matches.
Sean - April 21, 2011, 12:08 pm
But as they point out in Freakanomics, pool safety, for younger kids, at least, is a far greater concern.
gas - April 21, 2011, 11:42 am
I see your point. In a country where unfortunatly almost anyone can buy a gun, maybe I would be the first to teach my kids gun safety.
Sean - April 21, 2011, 11:12 am
A lot of overhand punching and feather boa garroting.
Sean - April 21, 2011, 11:10 am
I will probably never own a gun, or ever fire one again, but I would not try to ban them all, or even most of them. I am creeped out by dudes with whole arsenals, though. That alone suggests underlying issues.
Airman - April 21, 2011, 11:07 am
what do you expect from Surfers and movie stars?
Sean - April 21, 2011, 11:04 am
That's too simplistic, dude. California has about the same # of people as Canada, and there are more knife murders there, per year, than all types of murders in Canada. And we Canadians also have a lot of guns -- and aircraft carriers, by the way.
Airman - April 21, 2011, 11:04 am
My father, who is 86, grew up in a small town in Maine, and they hunted for their food. Very handy through the depression. So I was taught at an early age about gun safety. I hated hunting but it didn't stop him from taking me.
Sean - April 21, 2011, 10:55 am
But if your kids are likely to be arounds guns no matter what you do or don't own yourself, gun safety training is just responsible parenting.
gas - April 21, 2011, 9:24 am
I would have said scary better than irritating... Personally I can't imagine a father teaching his children how to use a firearm, except maybe in the case of hunters. Anyway, 5L for the poster :)
pzykosiz - April 21, 2011, 8:51 am
i hear you. no guns = no gun violence. you rarely hear about shootings in australia
Greeny - April 21, 2011, 6:47 am

Using firearms safely is the proper use of firearms.

The Americans who live in "Tornado Alley" at least understand the risks and don't b**** and moan when their house is mowed down, unlike in New Orleans (which is BELOW SEA LEVEL) where just about everyone acted like it was a big f***ing surprise.
Johnny - October 25, 2008, 7:22 pm
Now I agree with you there. Only Americans would move right back to the same area "again" and wait for it to happen "again". This is a get out of here free card on the Fed or insurance or whatever means you got.
Anonymous - October 23, 2008, 9:23 pm
And yet, they'll be done rebuilding their town before New Orleans, and New Orleans had a 2 year head start.

Those are some good points Me, but I think our American friends have some difficulties that Canadians don't. One seems to be illegal immigration (coupled with the inability to legally deny critical medical care), the other seems to be the Tort system ...
Me - June 14, 2009, 11:05 pm
All that being said, as much as I despise the Government having a hand in any sort of service outside of Military and Police, I don't really see any viable option. Leaving the poor to die, is inhumane, me paying for me and then them is bad business...
Me - June 14, 2009, 10:59 pm
And one other myth is this notion of "Rationed Care." I think that any Canadian here will attest that health care is not rationed in any way, save if you count Triage as rationing, but since all hospitals I know of use triage...including those in the US
Me - June 14, 2009, 10:53 pm
With Care being the operative word vice Insurance. This system a**umes that it is every citizens responsibility to contribute to ensure that everyone is cared for. That being said you still need a Gov. Issued Health Card to receive any benefits.
Me - June 14, 2009, 10:51 pm
The American's work on a system of Health Insurance, where those who can pay do, those who can't (or are under Fed Coverage) are paid for by the taxpayer. Canada, and most other industrialized countries, use a system of Health Care
Me - June 14, 2009, 10:49 pm
WTFO, I know it's a common myth. And I appreciate the retraction. I think the difference in the health care is as you state a very complex problem. I (personally) believe it to come down to a difference in semantics.
WTFO - June 14, 2009, 6:55 pm
insurance and they will make the govt's available for those poor disinfranchised folks. But who the hell is going to pay for insurance when Uncle Sam is giving it as an entitlement? Nobody and the taxpayers will pay the bill.
WTFO - June 14, 2009, 6:54 pm
and see for yourself how well those programs work. Also, the US health care costs are high because taxpayers are already paying for the uninsured and illegal aliens' health care. The govt is telling us now that if we want we can keep our current health
WTFO - June 14, 2009, 6:53 pm
my own experience as a US serviceman on how well our govt handles health care. They provide us with a govt procured (read lowest bidder) HMO, TriCare (or as we call it Tri to get Care). When you retire from service you go to the VA. Do a little research

WTFO - June 14, 2009, 6:44 pm
Adam, your statements overreach the truth. The World Health Org lists Canada as 30th in the world. Also, there a Canadians that come to the US when they get tired of the red ***e of a "single-payer" govt insurance and they can't find the specialized care
WTFO - June 14, 2009, 6:42 pm

WTFO, thats bull****. People do not come to USA for special surgeries. Canada has some of the best doctors and surgeons in the world, particularlt here in Edmonton at the U of A. I've met many people who have come from USA to get treatment in Canada

I'm American, military, and I love this country but the never forget stuff is getting ridiculous. Bilboards, License plates, Bumper stickers, Posters, Pamphlets... I haven't forgotten, just becoming a little numb at this point. Nice picture though.

Not bygone at all. America's Glory is a constant light in a dark world. The full light of that Glory will become evident when the socialist administration currently running the country into the ground is partially removed come the next election cycle.

While the brits and the yanks were fighting a couple hundred thousand Germans (split between Africa and Italy), USSR fought 4 million. D-Day came too late to make a difference and both Africa and Italy were of marginal importance.

The US suffered 18,000+ casualties on the first day of the invasion of Italy. THAT was a pretty serious meat-grinder. Seems pretty earnest to me.

...diverting to the Eastern Front and defeating the Russians - which, if they had been able to divert all manpower and resources, the Germans WOULD have done. Stalin begged for these diversions at the conferences with the rest of the Allied leaders.

Mark - April 1, 2009, 11:37 am
As for the Soviets winning the European war, I think it was a team effort. They couldn't have done as well as they did without the US fighting the Germans on the Western front and Italy. Hitler's biggest tactical mistake was Operation Barbarossa.
Mark - April 1, 2009, 11:33 am
I can agree that "80% of the German casualties were on the Eastern Front against the Soviets" but to put that into perspective, the Russians started killing Germans on June 22, 1941. Americans didn't start in earnest until June 6, 1944.
Learn History - April 1, 2009, 10:21 am
80% of the German casualties were on the Eastern Front against the Soviets. They won the European war, the US only helped! In Yalta FDR and Churchill agreed with Stalin that the Red Army would take Berlin, the bloodiest battle in history!
